The presence of antibodies against p53 protein in sera of patients with breast cancer was demonstrated by Crawford etal. in 1982. Thisfinding openedthe possibility of analysing potential changes in p53gene with simple and relatively cheap serological tests. In recentyears anti p53 antibodies have been analyzed in patients with different malignant neoplasms in order to estimate the occurence, potential influence on progno-sis and follow up of the disease. These tests have been also used for an early diagnosis in subjects with in-creased risk of developing malignancy. The aim of this review is to analyse the literature data on the role of anti p53 antibodies in diagnosis, follow up and prognosis of digestive tract neoplasms, particularly in colo-nic cancer.
