Deep malnutrition in patients with eating disorders can negatively influence function of all organs. One of the first localizations affected with deficits of proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins, electrolytes and minerals is the skin. Dermatologic symptoms result from malnutrition, recurrent vomiting, abuse of laxatives and/or diuretics or psychiatric disorders. The diagnostic criteria of specific (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) and non specific eating disorders are presented in the study, and the most common skin lesions (based on literature review) in children and adolescents with eating disorders are discussed. Attention is paid also to the etiopathogenesis of skin manifestations in these patients.
