Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of diseases of unknown etiology. It is considered that infectious agents, genetic predisposition, and immunological dysfunction play roles in their development. Both the diagnosis and treatment of IBD involve many difficulties. The procedures used are both invasive and expensive. This is the reason for the growing interest in noninvasive inflammatory markers which can be helpful in diagnosing and controlling IBD. In this article the advantages and disadvantages of both routine and relatively new inflammatory markers are presented.
