Introduction: Onychomycosis is the most common superficial fungal infection. Fluconazole in both open and double blind studies is proved to be effectiveandsafe.
Aim: The present study aimed at establishing the efficacy of the pulse fluconazole (300 mg once-weekly for 6 months in cases of finger nails infectionsand 12 months in cases of toenail infections.
Materiał and methods: The study comprised 43 patients with toenail onychomycosis and 2 patients with finger nail onychomycosis (patienfs age rangingfrom 18 to 70 years). Morę than 20% of the nail plate was affected in all cases. Diagnosis was based on direct microscopy. Results: 22 patients finished treatment up to this moment. The clinical cured ratę was 95% in this group. Mycologigal and clinical cure was observed in 77% patients.
Conclusions: 1. Fluconazole pulse therapy (300 mg once weekly) is effective in the treatment of onychomycosis. 2. Fluconazole in long therapy is safeandeffective.
