Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are formed in normal metabolic processes. Some elements of lifestyle (smoking, high alcohol consumption), environment pollution, infections and some medicines may be ano-ther source of ROS and additional burden for the organism. Unbalanced diet Iow in essential nutritional antioxidants is a factor increasing the free radical formation. Enzymatic and nonenzymatic defence me-chanisms against ROS attack have been developed in the body. The disturbance of metabolic homeostasis between oxidative and antioxidative processes is involved in the development of different diseases, including atherosclerosis, neoplasm, diabetes, neurodegenerative disturbances.
