Lewis blood group oligosaccharides, present on the surface of erythrocytes and many other human cells had recently attracted attention of researchers due to their potential importance in pathogenesis of ische-mic heart disease. The role of these molecules were linked with their participation in leukocytes - endothe-lium adhesion. The results of comparative and epidemiological studies provide evidence that persons with Lewis (a-b-) phenotype have a higher risk of ischemic heart disease. Also the results of some experimental studies on prevention of ischemia - reperfusion tissue injury by pretreatment with Lewis pentasaccharides are reviewed in this article.
