The endothelin family consists of 3 peptides, different in aminoacid sequence, coded by 3 distinct genes. Latest discoveries and development of specific endothelin agonists and antagonists allowed us to characterize physiological actions of these peptides and bring knowledge about complicated net of autocrine/pa-racrine hormons, its receptors and transforming enzymes called "the endothelin system". The presence of endothelin is observed in almost every tissue and organ of human and laboratory animals. There is a growing body of evidence that endothelin plays a key role in regulation of circulatory system function by direct influence on: vascularwalltonus, central nervoussystem, excretionof AVPandANP, renin-angiotensin-aldoste-ron system and renal function. In this review we attempt to summarize recentfindingson the metabolism of endothelin, with particular attention given to contribution of endothelin to modulation of a blood pressure in human and other animals.
