Standard 2-dimensional echocardiography is a basie tool of modern cardiology. However, it has important limitations such as dependence on good acoustic windows, subjective factors in the assessment and ina-bility of direct detection of myocardial perfusion. Novel technical developments such as contrast echocardiography address these issues, with a potential for direct visualization of myocardial perfusion. A number of techniques can be used for direct detection of presence of contrast microbubbles in myocardium, inclu-ding ECG-gated harmonie 2-dimensional echocardiography. In preliminary experience, thisapproach can be effectively used as a test for ischemia during dipyridamole-atropine stress testing with feasibility of 87% (in segmental analysis), sensitivityforsignificant stenosis - 81% and specificitiy - 89%.
