In the era of epidemie atherosclerotic disease one of the most important taks of clinical cardiology is prima-ry and secondary prevention of cardiovascular complications. Two of major completed clinical trials - HOPE and Heart Protection Study HPS - have indicated the possibility of efficient reduetion of cardiovascular risk and improving survival iv extensive groups of patients with cardiovascular risk factors. The results of tre-atment with ramipril and sinwastatin in patients with increased risk of cardiovascular complications are like-lyto expand their indications speetrum and open a new perspective in preventive cardiology. Newongoing trials have to address arising questions regarding the status of statins and converting enzyme inhibitors in prevention - such as optimization of dosage, possible synergistic effects, elucidation of presence or ab-senceof "drug classeffect" and usefulnessof thesedrugsin specific subsets of patients at risk - e.g. tho-se with isolated hypertension.
